PowerWells Foundation - affordable clean energy from recycled Electronic Waste

The PowerWells Foundation

Affordable Clean Energy from Repurposed Electronic Waste

A significant number of people globally today still suffer from energy poverty, facing limited or no access to safe and reliable energy sources. This lack of access leaves countless children and families in darkness every night, severely impacting education, health, and the environment. The World Economic Forum emphasises that access to energy is crucial for improving quality of life and driving economic development. Tragically, without energy and lighting, children are unable to study after dark and resort to using solid fuels and kerosene for energy and lighting, contributing to indoor air pollution and causing millions of deaths annually. Fuel-based lighting is also responsible for emitting more than 190 million tons of CO2 each year.

According to the 2021 International Energy Agency (IEA) World Energy Outlook, around 800 Million people worldwide, comprising 10% of the total population, lack access to electricity, with the majority residing in Africa and South Asia. In sub-Saharan Africa, approximately 600 million people, accounting for 57% of the population, live without electricity, compared to 200 million people (9% of the population) in developing Asia facing the same challenge. Indonesia alone accounts for around 7 Million people.

The UN Agenda for Sustainable Development has identified universal energy access as one of its key goals to achieve by 2030. Addressing energy poverty and ensuring reliable energy access for all is crucial for uplifting communities, promoting education and health, and safeguarding the environment..

PowerWells have a proven solution that can be part of the change that is needed

PowerWells Foundation Purpose

Recycling Electronic Waste.

The Foundation is dedicated to promoting the practice of recycling electronic waste by repurposing batteries and other electronic components, thereby diverting e-waste from landfill.

Providing Clean Energy Solutions.

PowerWells Foundation aims to replace polluting lighting sources, such as kerosene lamps, with clean LED lighting powered by repurposed batteries all derived from recycled electronic-waste.

Ongoing Innovation

Engaging in Research and Development activities, the Foundation seeks to find more effective ways to recycle, reuse, and extend the life of lithium-ion and other batteries used in PowerWells units.

Environmental Advocacy and Education.

The PowerWells Foundation actively educates communities and corporations about the environmental benefits of recycling electronic waste and repurposing batteries to provide solar power and lighting to remote off-grid communities.

How PowerWells Foundation will deliver

  • Our commitment to research and development drives ongoing innovation, leading to more efficient recycling, and re-purposing of electronic waste, ultimately extending the lifespan of lithium-ion and other batteries in PowerWell units.

  • We take pride in designing and developing cutting-edge clean energy and lighting solutions from repurposed electronic waste, emphasising ease of repair, maintenance, and refurbishment for sustainable use.

  • To make a positive impact, we distribute these energy and lighting systems to underserved communities lacking access to affordable electricity, enhancing their quality of life.

  • Our mission also involves engaging and empowering young people through practical training in Information Technology, electrical engineering, and design, utilising discarded electronic waste as a valuable educational resource.

  • Collaborating with corporate partners, we deliver meaningful team-building sustainability workshops and offer end-of-life solutions for corporate electronic waste, contributing to a circular economy.

  • Our global reach extends as we work with international partners to manufacture, distribute, maintain, and clean energy systems, stimulating local employment and fostering business opportunities.

  • To ensure accessibility, we provide affordable and flexible energy solutions, facilitating micro payments or non-cash payment alternatives such as tradable commodities.

  • As part of our eco-friendly vision, we replace polluting energy and lighting derived from kerosene and other harmful pollutants with clean, energy efficient LED lighting sourced from repurposed e-waste and powered by our PowerWell units.
